L'espressione del calcolo , quasi crudele , appraisal—amplified dal suo chiuso fist—gives quest'uomo un'aria aggressiva , ma non conosciamo la sua identità . L'iscrizione sul parapetto non aiuta . Queste lettere , VVO , sono stati interpretati come una forma del vivo latino ( nella vita ) . Ciò suggerirebbe che il ritratto è stato dipinto dalla vita e che conferisce al soggetto e al pittore una misura di immortalità . Potrebbe essere più probabile , però , essere un'abbreviazione di un motto umanista , forse virtus vincit omnia ( la virtù conquista tutto ) .
